Amy aprendió a tocar la guitarra a los quince años, y sólo 5 más tarde, debutó en la música con el single This is the life, lanzado el 30 de Julio del 2007, y del que ya ha vendido más de 2 millones de copias.
Quienes la conocen dicen que Amy es una chica tímida, que tiene una viva voz, con un canto en auge. A pesar de sus orígenes escoceses, su voz de canto ha sido descrita como en parte irlandesa y similar a la de Dolores O’Riordan de The Cranberries.
Amy también se ha autollamado poco femenina. En su blog de MySpace, menciona coches, como Audis, y videojuegos como sus principales intereses. MacDonald también ha expresad su admiración por otros cantantes del Reino Unido como Francis Healy (de la bansa Travis) o Elton John.
